What’s new in the Windows 10 October 2018 Update

The Windows 10 October 2018 Update

Lately, we’ve learned that Microsoft tends to release new major updates of Windows 10 during the fall and the spring. And this fall is no exception. The Windows 10 October 2018 Update, also known as version 1809 brings several new features to the OS.

As of yet, there’s no release date set for when the new OS arrives. But the name itself implies that we’re likely to get our hands on the official update during the coming month. Beta versions have however been around for a while and users have managed to get a sneak peek of the new functions.

SwiftKey

You might have used SwiftKey on your Android device, where it’s been available for years. But now it’s coming to Windows as well. SwiftKey lets you type on your screen by swiping your finger from letter to letter, instead of tapping each letter separately. Microsoft says that: “SwiftKey gives you more accurate autocorrections and predictions by learning your writing style.”

Dark Mode

Options for customizing every tech-related item into a matte black or a dark theme seems to have become a trend lately. And it’s not only mobile devices that are trying it, but even operating systems are also now starting to provide a “Dark Mode” as a visual theme for their users.

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft follows the trend and offers a “Dark Mode” in the Windows 10 October 2018 Update.

Storage Sense

In the coming Windows 10 updates a system called Storage Sense will be used and clear files you don’t use in order to free up disk space. The system will use placeholders of your files pointing to the real files located in the cloud service One Drive. The appearance of the file will be the same as a local file, but when clicking it, the user will get it from One Drive. Storage Sense will also delete temporary and old files etc replacing old tools such as Disk Cleanup.

Your Phone App

The new Windows 10 October 2018 Update will also include the Your Phone app which lets you mirror your phone content to a PC, for example, by dragging and dropping photos between the devices. The app will also allow users running Android 7.0 and later on their devices to text from their PC.

Search Previews

The final feature we’ve chosen to highlight is the updated Start Menu. It now features search previews, meaning Windows now shows a preview panel with more information about your search. For example, you’ll see a document preview if Windows matches your search with a document on your device. Similarly, you might see a Download button when searching for an application etc.
