New Nordic cooperation on 5G

Nordic leaders

The Nordic Prime Ministers recently met and entered a new cooperation on 5G. The countries’ vision regarding the subject was also presented in a declaration of intent.

The 5G cooperation

During Nordic Prime Ministers meeting held in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden the Nordic leaders came together for a collective concentration on 5G. Attendees were the Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, Erna Solberg from Norway, Lars Løkke Rasmussen from Denmark, Juha Sipilä from Finland and Katrín Jakobsdóttir from Iceland.

During the meeting, the Nordic leaders stated that the Nordic region will be the first interconnected 5G region in the world. They also identified areas where the Nordic cooperation needs to be intensified.

The Nordic region is one of the most innovative regions in the world. The development of 5G is progressing quickly and the Nordic region will be at the fore of this development. It creates jobs and prosperity in our countries,

– Swedish Prime Minister told the press.

Development of 5G in the Nordic region

To achieve this goal, the leaders have set up an action plan for adoption of 5G technology across the Nordic region.

What we can tell from the declaration of intent is that development of new testing facilities etc. should be encouraged and that obstacles for expansion of the networks should be removed.

The development should be monitored especially for certain sectors such as transport, mission-critical communications, advanced automation in the manufacturing industry and energy, environment, agriculture, and aquaculture. See a few examples of areas from sectors where 5G should be given an extra push in the Nordic region listed below.

  • Sustainable and climate-efficient transport solutions
  • Transport systems and connected vehicles
  • Remote-controlled airborne services (‘drones’)

Mission critical communications

  • Emergency services
  • Law enforcement

Advanced automation in the manufacturing industry

  • Augmented reality for employees
  • Interconnected factories
  • Robust and low latency communications, e.g. for robot control

Energy, environment, agriculture and aquaculture

  • Energy saving measures, smart grids, power management
  • Increased yield in food production
  • Detailed monitoring
