How to remotely control a Windows device

Remote control of a Windows device can be incredibly useful for technical support, accessing files and applications from another location, or providing assistance to someone else. Windows offers built-in tools such as Remote Desktop and Quick Assist to facilitate remote access. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to set them up and use them effectively.

Using Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop allows you to remotely connect to and control your Windows device from another computer. Note that Remote Desktop is not available for all editions of Windows, the basic Windows 10 Home won’t be able to run it. If you have the Enterprise or Pro version however you are good to go, here’s how to set it up:

Step 1: Enable Remote Desktop on the Windows Device

  1. Tap on the Start menu and select the gear icon to open Settings.
  2. In the Settings window, select “System.”
  3. Scroll down and tap on “Remote Desktop.”
  4. Toggle the switch to turn on Remote Desktop. You may need to confirm this action.
  5. Write down the name of the PC as you will need it to connect remotely.

Step 2: Configure Remote Desktop Settings

  1. Advanced Settings: Click on “Advanced settings” to configure additional options like requiring devices to use Network Level Authentication (NLA) to connect.
  2. Firewall Settings: Ensure that the firewall is configured to allow Remote Desktop connections. This can typically be done automatically when enabling Remote Desktop, but you can check this under “Allow an app through the firewall” in the Control Panel.

Step 3: Set Up Remote Desktop App on Another Device

  1. Launch the Remote Desktop app and select “Add PC.”
  2. Input the name of the PC you noted down earlier.
  3. Provide the credentials (username and password) of the account on the Windows device you want to access.
  4. Click “Connect” to establish the remote session.

Ensure both devices are connected to the internet, and for best performance, a stable and fast connection is recommended.

Using Quick Assist

Quick Assist is a built-in Windows feature that allows you to provide or receive assistance by sharing your screen or remotely control another device.

Step 1: Open Quick Assist

  1. Tap on the Start menu, type “Quick Assist,” and select it from the search results.
  2. Choose whether you want to “Give assistance” or “Get assistance.”

Step 2: Give Assistance

  1. If you’re giving assistance, sign in with your Microsoft account.
  2. After signing in, you will be given a security code. Share this code with the person you are assisting.
  3. The person you are assisting will open Quick Assist on their device, select “Get assistance,” and enter the code you provided.

Step 3: Get Assistance

  1. On the device needing assistance, open Quick Assist, and select “Get assistance.”
  2. Enter the code provided by the person giving assistance.
  3. Follow the prompts to allow the helper to view your screen or take control of your device.

That’s all there is to it, by following these steps, you can safely and effectively set up and use remote control for your Windows device, whether for remote support or accessing your own files and applications from afar. Just make sure to use secure passwords and practice proper cyber hygiene.
