Conducting GNSS surveying and mapping in dense forests presents significant challenges, including thick foliage and rapidly changing weather conditions. Factors that complicate the process of documenting forest inventory. To overcome these hurdles, Umweltdata, an Austrian company specializing in forest inventory, sought a reliable and portable solution that could withstand the rigors of forest work while delivering precise data.
The quest for a robust mobile RTK solution
Umweltdata’s search led them to Handheld’s Algiz tablets. These rugged 8-inch tablets are renowned for their durability, and ability to endure drops, scratches, and adverse weather. The tablets robust construction makes them suitable for the demanding conditions encountered in forest environments. Despite finding the ideal tablet, Umweltdata faced another challenge: sourcing an affordable, portable RTK GNSS module to complement their setup.
Partnership with General Laser
The solution emerged through collaboration with General Laser, a Handheld distributor. General Laser constructed a comprehensive RTK mapping kit that seamlessly integrated the Algiz tablet with the GL-RTK-RT8 receiver. This mobile RTK system included all the necessary components for efficient fieldwork: an RTK receiver, mounts, cables, antennas, and a compact transfer case. On top of that, the kit was also very cost-effective, meeting Umweltdata’s needs perfectly.
Superior performance in the field
The Algiz tablet’s IP67 rating ensures it can handle rain, dust, and harsh conditions typical of forest environments. Adhering to MIL-STD-810G standards, the rugged tablet is capable of withstanding low temperatures and physical impacts. Meanwhile, its lightweight and compact design allows forestry workers to navigate dense underbrush effortlessly. The high-resolution display provides excellent visibility even in bright sunlight, which is crucial for accurate data collection. Furthermore, the tablet’s long-lasting battery supports intensive daily fieldwork without interruptions.
Enhanced accuracy and efficiency with mobile RTK
With the mobile RTK mapping kit, Umweltdata maximized its operational efficiency and accuracy. The Algiz tablet and RTK GNSS module combine to enable real-time, precise identification and cataloging of trees. This enhanced accuracy and efficiency were pivotal for long-term spatial analysis and forest health planning. Training forestry workers to use the kit was quick and straightforward, often taking as little as 30 minutes.
The kit’s versatility is another significant advantage. The Algiz tablets allow for the cross-comparison of forestry inventory data using professional GIS and TPAD software such as €asy GIS, TPad, Apglos Survey Wizard, Aplitop, QGIS, and QField. This capability facilitates the generation of detailed topographic maps, advanced geospatial analysis, and the overlaying of forest inventory data with satellite imagery and terrain models.
Transforming forest management practices
The introduction of the mobile RTK system transformed Umweltdata’s workflow. By leveraging the rugged Algiz tablets, Umweltdata gained deeper insights into forest ecosystems and significantly improved their forest management practices. The new tool provided a competitive edge in the industry, enabling more informed decisions and efficient forest documentation.
